How We Review

Every recommendation on StrengthRoomLab is built on research, not hype. This page explains where our information comes from, how we choose products, and exactly how the StrengthRoomLab Score is calculated, including its limits.

What we do not do

We do not run physical trials of products at home or in a facility, and we never claim otherwise. Our verdicts are a careful synthesis of information that manufacturers, independent reviewers, and owners have published. When a claim depends on measurements we cannot verify, we either attribute it or leave it out.

Our process

  1. Define what matters. For each product type we write down the criteria first, for example weight range, build quality, footprint, and noise.
  2. Gather the contenders. Our editorial platform collects current product listings, including specifications, owner ratings, and images. We only consider products sold new, and we leave out listings for used, renewed, or open-box items.
  3. Research each product. We read the manufacturer specifications, published independent reviews, and patterns in owner feedback, including common complaints. When a listing and the manufacturer disagree, we follow the manufacturer’s own page; if we cannot confirm a figure there, we leave it out or mark it as not confirmed.
  4. Rank and explain. We rank products using the criteria for that category and our overall assessment of specifications, maker information, and owner reviews. The StrengthRoomLab Score is shown beside each product, but it does not set the order. We explain who each pick suits and who should look elsewhere.
  5. Draft and check. We use software tools, including AI models, to gather and summarize research and to write first drafts. Every article is checked against our editorial standards and sourcing rules before publication: product details are compared with their sources, and unsupported claims, prices written into the text, and broken links are removed. We correct errors as soon as we find them or a reader reports them.

The StrengthRoomLab Score

How a score is set. Every score starts from a base: the product’s average Amazon customer rating at the time our product data was last updated, converted to a 10-point scale with one fixed formula:

Base score = 6.2 + (average rating − 3) ÷ 2 × 3.2

So a 3.0-star average becomes 6.2, a 4.0-star average becomes 7.8, and a 5.0-star average becomes 9.4. When an article is audited, the editor may adjust that base by up to 0.5 points, up or down, based on four things: specifications that are missing or wrong in the listing, complaints that repeat across owner reviews, problems with the listing itself, and how well the product fits the topic of the article. Each adjustment and the reason for it are recorded in our editorial audit notes. A product with no rating shows no score.

Listing problems we always adjust for. We apply the same rules to every product:

  • If a listing shows exactly the same average rating and number of ratings as the listing of a different model that is still on sale, the ratings are likely pooled across products, and we lower the base by 0.3.
  • If a listing shares exactly the same rating and number of ratings with the previous or next generation of the same model line, we lower the base of both listings by 0.2.
  • If listings for different sizes, weights, or motor ratings of the same product line share one set of ratings, we lower the base of each of those listings by 0.2, because the ratings do not describe one specific version.
  • Color or bundle versions of the same product are not adjusted for sharing ratings, and we include only one of them in an article.
  • If a listing’s specifications differ materially from the manufacturer’s official product page, or contradict themselves on a figure the manufacturer confirms, we lower the base by 0.2. Figures in different units are converted before we compare them.
  • A listing receives only one of these deductions, the larger one when more than one applies. We make the specification deduction only when we have checked the manufacturer’s own page.

What the score does not include. Price is not part of the score. Neither are the brand or any affiliate commission, and the score does not decide a product’s position in a ranking: brands and retailers cannot pay for a score or ask for one to change. Availability helps decide which products we include and which ones earn a pick. Read the pros, cons, and “who should look elsewhere” notes alongside the number.

Range. The base score runs from 6.2 to 9.4, and an adjustment can move it by up to 0.5, so scores run from 5.7 to 9.9. No product gets a 10, because no product suits everyone.

Labels. Product cards may show a short label next to the score:

  • 9.0 and above: Very Good
  • 8.0 to 8.9: Good
  • 7.0 to 7.9: Fair
  • Below 7.0: Average

How we choose picks

Each roundup names a top pick and, where it is useful, picks for specific needs such as small apartments or garage gyms. Every pick label is backed by a specification or data point we compare within the same article, and we explain the reason for each pick. A top pick must be the main type of product the article is about, must fit the article’s key requirement, and must have a strong owner rating. We do not give the top pick to a product whose maker lists it as discontinued when a current product qualifies, or to a product whose production status we could not confirm with the manufacturer. If no product fits a need well, we leave that pick out rather than force one.

Safety

We do not give professional advice, and our articles do not replace a qualified professional. For electric products such as walking pads, we point out safety features and certifications only when the manufacturer documents them. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Keeping recommendations current

Prices, ratings, and availability on Amazon change often, and we do not show prices on this site. Ratings and specifications come from the product data we collected when an article was written or last reviewed, and we do not refresh every score automatically, so the StrengthRoomLab Score shown on a product card can be out of date. Every article shows when it was last updated, and we update articles when we re-check them or a reader reports a problem.
